A VERY RARE .577 PERCUSSION BREECH-LOADING CARBINE, MODEL 'BENJAMIN'S PATENT', no visible serial number,
circa 1863/64 and possibly for trials, with 21in. barrel, block and blade fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight with two additional folding leaves, moulded bolster with nipple, articulated breech-bolt with spring release thumb-catch, the top of bolt signed 'BENJAMIN'S PATENT, 20 ST. MARY AXE LONDON', plain bar-action lock, walnut full-stock with brass heel-plate and trigger-guard, single side-nail and twin iron barrel-bands, brass nose-cap and iron jag-ended ramrod
Provenance: Very few Benjamin Patent Carbines are known with the only other known identical to this being in the Royal Artillery Museum at the Rotunda, Woolwich collection. It was almost certainly produced for the Ordnance trials of 1864 and subsequently rejected, although this is not recorded.
This carbine is constructed to the A. Byrnes & H. Benjamin's Patent No. 3308 of december 1863 which itself was a rework of a previous Patent by Byrnes, No. 1908, which he provisionally registered in 1862.
