COIGNETS PUPIL, ST ETIENNE,
A GOOD PAIR OF 28-BORE FLINTLOCK DOUBLE-BARRELLED HOLSTER-PISTOLS, no visible serial number,
circa 1800, with side by side 8 1/2in. barrels decorated with gilt-washed engraving at the breeches, muzzles, along the top-ribs and the first third of the barrels, set back from the muzzle boat-shaped fore-sights (gilding thinned), engraved top-tangs with carved and raised sighting grooves, engraved bevel-edged locks with carved and stepped pointed tails and signed below the lozenge-shaped pans 'COIGNETS PUPIL' on the right locks and 'A ST. ETIENNE' on the left, carved cock-screws with gilt washed stippled grounds, walnut full-stocks with raised borders around the furniture and floral carving around the top-tang and behind ramrod throat (working inlet repair behind the right lock on one pistol and expert repair to wrist on the other), fully carved and embossed rococco white-metal escutcheons to back of the wrists, long eared engraved and moulded iron butt-caps, engraved and moulded pillar fronted trigger-guard bows and finials, probable replacement ramrods, each pistol approximately 2 1/2lbs. in weight and 15in. overall length
Provenance: Coignet was a well-known French gunmaking family that worked out of St. Etienne, the best known of which was the 'Claudes' who have a cumulative working period of 1744-1817. These pistols are signed by an apprentice 'pupil' of theirs, and possibly were either a passing out apprentice piece or made in Coignets own style by a former employee
