A SCARCE .750 FLINTLOCK SERVICE PISTOL FROM THE STEAMER 'PLEIAD', no visible serial number,
circa 1854, with round brushed bright tapering 9in. barrel, solid plain top-tang, plain brushed bright lock signed below the pan 'E. & W. BOND, LONDON', ring-necked cock, walnut full-stock, brass furniture including domed butt-cap, the trigger-guard bow engraved 'PLEIAD', and captive iron rammer
Provenance: 'Pleiad' was a small steamer built by John Laird of Birkenhead to explore the Niger delta and establish trade in 1854. The ship was armed with a single 12pdr. gun, four swivel guns, a number of Minie guns together with pistols, shotguns and trade muskets. The Captain, William Balfour Baikie developed large trading port in the region but died during a voyage home in 1864. A pair of similar pistols belonging to the Pleiad are kept at The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London
