A GOOD INDIAN 'PATA' or GAUNTLET SWORD WITH EARLIER SOLINGEN BLADE,
first quarter of the 18th century, the blade possibly 16th century, with straight double-edged 37in. blade, broad blind fuller for approximately the first third, the right face marked in the fuller 'HAM STAMM' punctuated between the words and at the end by small star stamps, the reverse marked in the fuller 'SOLINGEN' also with small star stamps before and after, long blade supporting tongues carved with arabesque finials extending forwards of the knuckle-bowl, moulded iron hand and sleeve guard engraved and moulded with borders, reinforcing ridge at wrist, cylindrical hand-grip held by external florally carved rivet heads and articulated chain arm support, the whole cleaned in antiquity with some loss to engraved detail, corroded internally (no cracks), pin-holes present from a now absent sewn-in liner, overall length 50in., weight approx. 3 1/2lbs.
