TWO SCARCE .22 BREAK-BARREL AIR-RIFLES, MODEL 'S-55' & 'S-80', no visible serial numbers,
circa 1982, the first with blued and sighted 16in. barrel, plain air-chamber with applied alloy rail and plain beech half-pistol half-stock with finger-grooved fore-end, the second similar but with 19 1/4in. barrel fitted with a muzzle-weight and tunnel fore-sight and an angular beech half-stock with plain full pistol-grip, raised cheek-piece and deep fore-end with machined grooves, both rifles appearing unused with only minor storage marks
Provenance: BSF or Bayerische Sportswaffen Fabrik were the underdog of post-war German air-rifle manufacture. Despite starting in 1935, the war years hindered production until 1948 with the now highly sought after 'S-54' under-lever. The small company always struggled to compete with their giant rivals Diana (Mayer & Grammelspacher) and Weihrauch and the collapse of their UK agent Norman May & Co. in 1980 saw most of the 130 employees laid off. Despite being bailed out by another German, Herbert Gayer, decline continued until the whole concern was bought by Weihrauch in the early 1980's. Some of BSF's patents and design features were incorporated into their rifles, but the actual BSF models ceased from that moment on. Both these rifles date from the Herbert Gayer period when production had fallen to only a couple of units a day. The S-80 was the last break-barrel model produced, and is very hard to find
