A RARE .577 (BOXER) SIX-SHOT MANSTOPPER REVOLVER, MODEL 'BRAENDLIN- TRANTER TYPE', serial no. 64,
circa 1866, with octagonal 4in. barrel also bearing later possibly South African registration number '179HH8NP' and further marked 'DECIMAL .577', bead fore-sight, full-length sighting groove to the top-strap and signed 'MANTON & CO, MAKERS TO H.R.H THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH, LONDON & CALCUTTA', one piece iron frame with front-mounted release-catch for the flat-fronted cylinder-rod, fully fluted six-shot cylinder for the early cartridge with detachable ratchet indexing back-plate, polished hammer and trigger, chequered walnut one-piece grip, iron heel-cap and loose lanyard ring, the whole bearing strong traces of original finish to barrel and cylinder, all matching numbers
Other Notes: Interestingly Ron Stewart's book 'The Firearms of William Tranter' makes note of the fact that serial number '64' has a Melbourne retailers address. Therefore it is possible that this revolver was manufactured by one of the other Birmingham manufacturers such as Tipping & Lawden or Webley.
