MADE FOR CHARLES GORDON. JOHN DICKSON & SON
A UNIQUE PAIR OF 8-BORE FLINTLOCK BLUNDERBUSSES, serial no's. 4605 & 6,
ordered on June 9th 1893, with two-stage 16 3/4in. blued iron barrels, the top-flats at breech signed 'JOHN DICKSON & SON, 63 PRINCES STREET EDINBURGH', plain, shallow flared muzzles, moulded reinforcing bands at breech cut with a sighting notch, Birmingham proofs, colour hardened borderline and fully scroll engraved top-tangs numbered '1' and '2' for a pair respectively, slightly curved and radiused colour hardened locks with full border and scroll engraving signed 'JOHN DICKSON & SON' (No.1 lock with hairline fracture between cock and pan), plain pans with platinum touch-holes, the frizzens with full borderline and scroll engraving to the forwards faces, engraved ring-necked cocks, figured walnut plain French polished full-stocks, white metal oval escutcheons to the undersides of butt, engraved blued iron furniture except colour hardened trigger plate, finial and ramrod pipes and complete with their original brass tipped mahogany ramrods, some storage markings and scoring to frizzens but unfired.

Other Notes: These guns were probably the most eccentric order by the famous Scottish collector Charles Gordon, who in the late 19th and early 20th centuries ordered many muzzle-loading firearms, his favoured maker being John Dickson & Son of Edinburgh. Dickson's completed their last firearm for Gordon, a percussion rifle, in February 1904. Like so many of the firearms ordered by Gordon, these guns remain in virtually 'as new' condition.
