A 12-BORE 1863 PATENT (FIRST PATTERN) SNAP-ACTION THUMBHOLE-UNDERLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 6874,
30in. black powder only bold damascus barrels, rib engraved 'J. PURDEY 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET LONDON' and '1', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, Purdey patent thumbhole underlever, patent no. 1104 of 2nd May 1863 (first pattern), carved percussion fences, rebounding back-action locks, border and acanthus scroll engraving, the underside engraved 'PURDEY'S PATENT', retaining very slight traces of colour-hardening, 14 3/8in. well-figured stock (chequering refreshed), weight 6lb. 8oz.
