actions and fore-ends numbered 115050 / 1, 28in. nitro barrels, the tubes and ribs engraved 'RUSSELL HILLSDON. ROYAL COUNTIES. CHICHESTER.' and '1' and '2' within engraved ovals at the breech-ends, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 choke in all, No.2 left bore dimension marginal, treble-grip actions, automatic safeties with 'SAFE' details, removable striker discs, beaded borders and partial acanthus scroll engraving, retaining very slight traces of colour-hardening and finish, 14 1/4in. stocks including 7/16in. rubber recoil pads, weight 6lb. 3oz. (No.1) and 6lb. 2oz. (No.2), fore-end finials engraved '1' and '2' within ovals, in their individual lightweight canvas and leather cases
Provenance: The vendor has kindly provided us with the following information:
Wilfred Webb (for whom the guns were made) was educated we think at Sherboune school. Lieutenant-Colonel Wilfred Francis Webb (1897-1973) went to India was political agent Malwa and Bhopal States, Central India 1941-45 and the Last "Resident" in Kashmir 1945-1947 before independence 1947. We know some of the Mountbatten family stayed with them when visiting. After independence went to Rhodesia and became a very large tobacco farmer near Umtali. The guns were then passed to his son Hubert Eustace Webb who was at Winchester where he was invited by Field Marshall Sir Bernard Montgomery to go to Germany for 10 days with his son in 1945. Then went to Oxford where he was awarded four Blues and scored 146 in the varsity match. After a short commission in the Army he trained at St Thomas's in London eventually becoming Professor of neurovirolgy. The guns were then passed to his son John Webb who is MD of a large shipping company.
