REPUTEDLY FORMERLY THE PROPERTY OF WALTER W. WINANS
A CROCODILE SKIN LEG-OF-MUTTON SINGLE GUNCASE,
circa 1900, fitted for 30in. barrels, the exterior gold embossed with 'W.W.W.'

Provenance: Walter W. Winans, (1852 -1920) was noted sportsman, hunter, author, horse breeder and artist. Born in St. Petersburg, the son of an American construction worker, he spent his early years in Russia before moving to the United Kingdom at the age of 18.
Famed for his marksmanship he won the English revolver championships no less than twelve times (consecutively), the dueling pistol championship in Paris in 1900 and was a double Olympic medal winner, gold in the running deer at the 1908 London Olympics and silver at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. He is unique in being the only Olympic competitor to win medals gold in both sport and art, winning the gold for his sculpture 'An American Trotter' at Stockholm.
He also won two gold medals at the Vienna Exposition of 1910 for 'most representative group of big game shot by one man' (consisting of sixty animals)
