AN INTERESTING .577 SNIDER MK II VOLUNTEER OR OFFICER'S SHORT RIFLE BY BECKWITH, no visible serial number,
circa 1868, with 29 1/2in. barrel and rifled with three grooves, P56 type bayonet lug at muzzle and standard military pattern sights including barleycorn front-sight and ladder rear-sight to 900 yards, hook breech, Mk II Snider action with acknowledgement to Snider's patent and embellished with foliate decoration, borderline engraved bar-action lock of Enfield P53 style but of reduced size, signed with makers name to centre, 'BECKWITH', slender iron mounted full walnut stock, the wrist with inset white metal escutcheon engraved with the original owners name 'H. C. STEWART', the barrel secured by two flat keys not barrel bands, complete with correct pattern rod
Provenance: This rifle was originally produced as a muzzle loader of an unusual volunteer or officer's pattern popular circa 1856 to 1859 and then at a later date converted to a Snider breech-loader
