AN EARLY .700 FLINTLOCK HORSE PISTOL SIGNED W. MAWD,
of 1725-30 style but with 13in. two-stage barrel (touch-hole rebuilt), London proofs, squared top-tang, radiused banana-shaped lock signed 'W. MAWD' below the pan, swan-necked cock, bridle-less frizzen, walnut full-stock with carved apron and moulded borders around the lock and side-cheek, brass furniture including grotesque mask butt-cap with long side-spurs, escutcheon at wrist numbered '2', rounded 'fiddle' shaped finial to the trigger plate, engraved serpentine side-plate, turned ramrod thimbles and brass tipped ramrod

Provenance: Very little is known about W. Mawd. Howard Blackmore, in his volume 'Gunmakers of London Supplement 1350-1850' simply lists him as a name found on late 17th century pistols with London proofs
