being a date-code for 1861, with refinished octagonal to round 19 3/4in. smoothbore barrel marked 'PATENT' and with the crossed pistols trademark, dove-tailed fore-sight, rear-sight also forming the barrel release catch, complex cocking link system (link arms re-plated), plain nickel-plated air-chamber, walnut straight-hand half-stock chequered at the wrist and with raised cheek-piece and schnabel fore-end tip, nickel-plated furniture including Swiss-style heel-plate and raised scrolled trigger-guard for the double set triggers, much original finish remaining except where noted

Provenance: Eisenwerke Gaggenau (literally Iron Works, Gaggenau) are one of the oldest companies in Germany and have been trading since about 1680. In the middle of the 19th century they commenced production of air-rifles and pistols, making many examples for retail by others. The American version of this rifle is actually marked 'Columbia' although examples intended for the domestic market were seldom marked. Eisenwerke Gaggenau ceased production of airguns around the turn of the last century, although the firm still exists today, now simply known as Gaggenau and are apparently Germany's largest manufacturer of kitchen appliances
