Provenance: Gough Thomas was born Godfrey Thomas Garwood on the 2nd August 1899 at Ipswich. His father, also Thomas, was an insurance agent. From an early age he was immersed in a traditional country way of life. He was an engineer by trade but also took up writing on guns and shooting, writing under the nom de plume of Gough Thomas. He wrote several books that became standards over the years, Shotguns & Cartridges For Game And Clays; Gough Thomas's Gun Book; Shotgun Lore For The Sportsman, Shotgun Shooting Facts and Gough Thomas's Second Gun Book.
He also began to write for The Shooting Times in the 1950s, a magazine that had an enormous readership and influence in this era and it is probably through his regular articles for this periodical that he became so well-known and respected in the shooting world. He died in Devon on the 21st May 1987.
