A 7.63 (MAUSER) SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL, MODEL 'PRE-WAR COMMERCIAL', serial no. 98053, WITH HOLSTER-STOCK,
for 1905, with blued tapering 5in. barrel (finish rubbed to underside), integral fore-sight, elevating rear-sight to rear of receiver, blued short extractor, brushed bright bolt, factory blued receiver and frame, the right hand side of the integral magazine housing engraved 'CAP'T A.I. FRASER, 9TH HODSON'S HORSE -FROM J.G.F.', new style safe (hammer not marked), 35 groove ribbed walnut bag-shaped grips with lanyard ring at heel, integral ten-shot magazine and complete with its matching number walnut holster-stock (cracked and repaired) and a partial leather harness, overall length of pistol only 12 1/2in.
Provenance: Captain Arthur Ian Fraser (28th November 1879 - 30th November 1917) entered the services on 17th November, 1900 and was appointed to the Indian Army on the 10th April 1901. He went to France in 1914, and became Major in September 1915. In January 1917 he was awarded the DSO and was mentioned in dispatches. On 30th November 1917 he was killed in action at Gauche Woods, France serving in the Indian Regiment, C Squadron 9th Hodson Horse.
This Lot is accompanied by a quantity of research undertaken on Capt. Fraser, including copies of his death record, copies of some general correspondence during his time in India, a copy of 'The Army Lists of Hodson's Horse 1857 - 1928', and a copy of 'Hodson's Horse 1857 - 1922' by Major F.G. Cardew O.B.E., where the action at Gauche Woods is described.
