A .450/.455 SIX-SHOT REVOLVER, MODEL '1879', serial no. 4920,
circa 1881, with blued octagonal 4 1/2in. barrel, the raised top-rib signed 'W. JEFFERY & SON, PLYMOUTH', blade fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight, break open blued frame marked 'W. TRANTER'S PATENTS', single hook-latch closure, fluted cylinder, double-action mechanism and finely chequered walnut one-piece grip (chequering rubbed), overall length of revolver 11 3/8in., complete with a period full-flap leather service holster and a World War One period woven lanyard

Provenance: The heel of this revolver is engraved 'HENRY B. SCAIFE. ROYAL SUSSEX REGT.', and this Lot is accompanied by a letter listing a brief service history of Colonel Henry Browse Scaife of the 107th Foot (later the Royal Sussex Regiment). War Service of Officers of the Army list Colonel Scaife as serving in the Defence of Alexandria in 1882, being awarded the Bronze Star, the Sudan Expedition in 1884 - 5, being awarded the Nile clasp, and the 'South African War' 1900 - 01 where he was awarded the Queens Medal with 4 clasps
