THOMAS BOSS, LONDON
A 16-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING-GUN, serial no. 605,
for 1844, with twist 32in. barrels, traces only of address to top-rib, fully engraved top-tang, borderline and scroll engraved bar-action locks signed 'THOMAS BOSS', engraved slab-sided dolphin-headed hammers, walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist, iron furniture and provision for under-barrel ramrod (absent), 48 1/4in. overall, weight approximately 6 1/2lbs.
Provenance: This gun, no 605, was ordered from Thomas Boss at 73 St James's Street, London by Capt. J. Cavendish in 1844. William John Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck was born on the 17th September 1800. He used his second name and was known as John Cavendish. He entered the army in 1818 and by 1821 was a Captain in the Life Guards. Between 1824 and 1834 he was a Captain in the Royal West India Rangers. In March 1854 he succeeded to become the 5th Duke of Portland.
He undertook a major redevelopment of his home Welbeck Abbey and constructed a complex of underground rooms and tunnels. He was very introverted and eccentric, didn't want to speak to people and never invited anybody to his house. Even his employees were not allowed to speak to him and he only ventured outside at night. He died on the 6th December 1879.
