A SCARCE PAIR OF BINOCULARS, MODEL 'DRP FELDSTECHER VERGR.12' MARKED TO EDWARD LEONARD ELLINGTON, R.H.A.,
circa 1900, with black leather-covered brass frame marked 'CARL ZEISS JENA DRP' to left prism plate and 'FELDSTECHER VERGR.12' to right prism plate, and 'N. S. L. / X 2823' and 'E.L. ELLINGTON R. H. A. ' to front, focuses functioning, bakelite eye-cups, together with its brown leather case (worn) stamped 'E. L. E.'
Provenance: Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Edward Leonard Ellington, GCB, CMG, CBE (30 December 1877 – 13 June 1967) was a senior officer in the Royal Air Force. Ellington was commissioned into the Royal Artillery on 1st September 1897. Later promoted to Lieutenant on 1st September 1900 and then to Captain on 27th April 1904 before being posted to the War Office on 24th August 1909. He served in the First World War as a Staff Officer and then as Director-General of Military Aeronautics. He further served as Chief of the Air Staff in the mid-1930s and in that role implemented 'Scheme F', being an increase in the size of the Royal Air Force to 187 squadrons and creating RAF Fighter Command, RAF Bomber Command, RAF Coastal Command and RAF Training Command that served Britain so well during the Second World War. He then subsequently served as Inspector-General of the RAF until his retirement in 1940.
