A 12-BORE EASY-OPENING SIDELOCK EJECTOR, serial no. 6400,
29in. replacement nitro barrels, the rib engraved 'BOSS & CO. 13/14. CORK STREET. LONDON. W.1.' and gold-inlaid '2' at the breech end, 2 3/4in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. and 1/4 choke, toplever gold-inlaid '2', automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators (left missing inlay), rolled-edge triggerguard, fine bouquet and scroll engraving, the action bar engraved 'BOSS & CO. PATENT', retaining some colour-hardening and finish, 14 3/4in. figured stock, weight 6lb. 10oz.
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed as No.2 of a pair, in July 1913, for "General Lord Falmouth for the Hon. J. Boscawen."
Major General Evelyn Edward Thomas Boscawen, 7th Viscount Falmouth, KCVO, CB (24 July 1847 – 1 October 1918) was a British peer and British Army Officer.
Boscawen was commissioned into the Coldstream Guards: he played cricket for the Household Brigade and then for the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards. He fought in the Anglo-Egyptian War in 1882 and, having been promoted to Colonel in 1886, he also took part in the Nile Expedition between 1894 and 1895. He was promoted to Major-General in 1898 and became Assistant Military Secretary to the Commander-in-Chief, Ireland in 1900. He was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Kent on 8 January 1900, and of Cornwall on 19 March. He retired from the army on 9 August 1902.
The Hon. J. Boscawen would appear to be Hon. John Richard de Clare Boscawen, brother of the 7th Viscount. Hon. John's daughter married in June 1913, so it is possible the pair of guns acted as some sort of gift.
