AN HISTORIC CASED CRIMEAN WAR .36 PERCUSSION REVOLVER, MODEL '1851 LONDON NAVY', serial no. 6984,
for 1854, with octagonal 7 1/2in. barrel, the top-flat signed 'ADDRESS COL. COLT, LONDON', bead fore-sight, London proofs, plain roll engraved cylinder, open iron frame marked 'COLT'S PATENT', dome headed action screws, iron grip-straps and trigger-guard, the back-strap engraved 'H.M. THOMPSON ESQ, 9TH REGT.', hinged under-barrel rammer and smooth walnut grips, some shallow pitting and complete with an English marked Colt storage case, compartmented and lined in russet velvet (faded), paper instruction label inside lid and containing a Colt iron mould, a Dixon bag-shaped flask (spring at fault), cleaning rod, 'L' shaped nipple key and cap-tin
Provenance: Lieutenant, later Captain, H M Thompson served with the 9th Regiment in the Crimea from the 15th February 1855 and was involved with both the siege and fall of Sebastopol; he was in the trenches during a sortie on the 5th June and also during the assault and capture of the Quarries on the 7th June. On the 18th June he was with Eyre's Brigade at the assault and capture of the Cemetery and Rifle-pits, and with the Reserve at the attack of the Redan on the 8th September gaining the Crimea Medal with Clasp and the Turkish Medal. He later commanded a hundred men of the 31st Regiment with a Field Force under Captain Murray, Royal Artillery, in an expedition against the Taepings in the vicinity of Shanghae in March 1863. (Reference Hart's Army List 1885). This revolver was carried by him throughout.
