CORT & PAUL, LONDON
A .577 PERCUSSION SINGLE-SHOT L.V.R.C. PRIZE RIFLE, MODEL 'PATTERN 1860 TYPE', no visible serial number,
circa 1862, with reblued 33in. barrel rifled in five grooves, the top near breech marked '...LONDON, INVENTOR OF THE EXPANSIVE PRINCIPLE' (the beginning obscured), block and blade fore-sight, elevating ladder rear-sight, commercial Birmingham proofs, border and scroll engraved military style lock further engraved with a Queen's crown over 'L.V.R.C' (London Volunteer Rifle Corps) over 'CORT & PAUL', walnut three-quarter stock with iron furniture (plugged holes at wrist from a later peep-sight, inlet repair over a rear swivel hole), vacant oval silver escutcheon to the left hand cheek, two iron barrel-bands, no bayonet lug and jag-ended ramrod

Other Notes: Originally the barrel would have read: "W. W. Greener London Inventor of the Expansive Principle". The rifle was made by W.W. Greener who claimed to have invented the expanding bullet in 1835 when it was tested by the Ordnance and rejected as they could see no purpose in it. The lock is also of a style made by him for select items for supply to rifle volunteer corps.
