circa 1925, 27in. nitro barrels (some dents), the rib engraved 'GEORGE GIBBS. BRISTOL & 35. SAVILLE ROW. LONDON. W.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 choke in both, automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, bouquet and scroll engraving, retaining some original colour-hardening and finish, 14 1/2in. figured stock, weight 5lb. 4oz., in its makers canvas and leather case
Provenance: The vendor has kindly informed us that this gun previously belonged to his Grandfather, Major General Stuart Rawlins CB, CBE, DSO, MC. & Bar
Major General Stuart Blundell Rawlins CB, CBE, DSO, MC & Bar (18th August 1897 - 2nd April 1955) was commissioned into the Royal Artillery from the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich on the 26th May 1916. By the end of the First World War he had been awarded the Military Cross twice and had been wounded in action.
Between the wars he served with the British forces in Malta, England, India and in Africa with the Kings African Rifles.
During the Second World War, he served with the Royal Infantry in the 3rd Infantry Division and was heavily involved in the plans for the invasion of Europe, taking part in the Normandy landings - and is reported as often leading his artillery from the front, acting as a spotter and ordering fire from the plane, tank or armoured car from which he was commanding. He was also involved in the planning of Operation Veritable, the offensive into the Reichswald in the final stages of the war.
After the war he became the commander of the 49th (West Riding) Infantry Division in March 1945 before commanding the British Military Mission to Greece. Following this he was appointed Director Royal Artillery, then commander of the British Training Team in Iraq before retiring in 1951
