A CASED 54-BORE WEBLEY SOLID FRAME DOUBLE ACTION REVOLVER BY SAML. YORK, EX-COLLECTION OF WILLIAM C. DOWELL, serial no 39618,
circa 1860, with 6in. octagonal barrel, rifled with three grooves and fitted with a Kerr type loading lever, the top strap engraved with the retailers name 'SAML. YORK, & CO. WOLVERHAMPTON', borderline engraved frame also marked on right 'LONDON No 39,618', five shot cylinder, two piece chequered walnut grips, contained in its original blue baize lined and partitioned mahogany case, accessories include, double cavity mould, copper bodied flask, turnscrew, nipple key, cleaning rod, tin of lubricating compound, pewter oil bottle, and a tin of percussion caps, retaining a good percentage of original deep blue finish, the case lining and accessories all above average
Provenance: The Webley Solid Frame was introduced by Webley around 1859 and featured some important improvements over the earlier Wedge Frame, it utilized a solid one piece frame into which the barrel screwed as a permanent fixture, thus ensuring perfect rigidity, the cylinder being held in position by a removable axis pin, the pin being a sliding fit through holes in the rear and front of the frame. The Solid Frame revolver was made in relatively small numbers. The vendor states he acquired this revolver at a Weller & Dufty sale back in 1966, it was included in the sale of the William Chipchase Dowell collection and it is illustrated on plate 20A in the standard reference work on Webley pistols entitled "WEBLEY STORY"
