for 1829, with 30in. twist iron barrels, the top-rib signed 'I PURDEY No.314 1/2 OXFORD STREET, LONDON', 'J.P.' maker's mark to underside of breech, bead fore-sight, platinum line and vented plugs, fully scroll engraved top-tang, borderline and scroll engraved bar-action locks signed 'PURDEY' and with patent safeties behind the hammers (currently inoperative), walnut half-stock manufactured for the right shoulder - left eye, chequered at wrist, iron furniture, articulated safety lever bar along the lower tang and original ramrod, together with its makers walnut case lined and compartmented in green baize and with reproduction trade-label applied inside the lid, complete with period powder and shot flasks and other sundry accessories (some later)

Provenance: Charles Eley, of Eley Brothers (London) fame commissioned this shotgun from James Purdey in 1829 for £45. Charles had been blinded in his right eye by an earlier experiment with fulminate, but went on with his brother William to found the now famous firm of Eley Brothers in 1828. Sadly, his brother was to die in another explosion whilst experimenting with fulminate in 1842
