AN INTERESTING .600 UNSIGNED GERMANIC STYLE FLINTLOCK JAEGER RIFLE, CIRCA 1750, no visible serial number,
with 27in. octagonal slightly swamped barrel rifled with seven grooves and gold lined touch hole, dovetailed silver bladed front sigh and fixed replacement vee rear-sight, the borderline engraved lock of rounded form plain and unsigned, no bridle between pan and frizzen screw, the swan-neck cock a replacement, adjustable double set triggers, full walnut stock with raised cheek rest, unusual two piece take-down fore-end, the area around the barrel tang carved with a shell motif in typical Griffin of London style, the iron mounts include large blued scroll trigger-guard with fleur de lys finial, butt-plate with trap for a plug bayonet (missing), the fore-end with bone nosecap, complete with bone tipped wooden ramrod.
Provenance: Accompanying this interesting rifle is a letter signed by Keith Neal stating that it was obtained from an auction of the contents of Woolton Wamen Hall, near Henley in Arden in 1951. The letter further states it was originally made by Pistor of Carsfell circa 1720's as a hunting rifle and rebuilt by Benjamin Griffin of London circa 1750. Keith Neal further speculates that the rifle might have come from Packington Hall which is not far from Woolton Hall, where at one time there was a large collection of guns by Griffin
