I. SHEATH, BIRMINGHAM
A GOOD AND RARE 38-BORE PERCUSSION SELF-COCKING REVOLVER, MODEL 'SHEATH'S PATENT', serial no. 23,
circa 1856, with blued octagonal 8in. barrel attached to the open frame by a wing-nut, engraved band to the radiused muzzle, borderline and scroll engraved blued action body with 'L' shaped spring safe and spur-less hammer, the right side of body marked 'SHEATH'S PATENT No. 23', guarded self-cocking trigger and finely chequered walnut grip with trapdoor to the engraved butt-cap, no provision for rammer, strong amount of finish remaining

Provenance: Sheath revolvers are rare. When Taylerson wrote his definitive work 'The Revolver, 1818-1865, only one revolver was known, serial number 59. Sheath, more known for his collaborations with Hollis (q.v.) came quite late to the revolver race but his design was considered quite old fashioned even when launched. Despite open frame offerings persevering from the workshops of Colt, solid frame designs were already being considered superior and models from Adams, Tranter and of course Webley soon came to dominate the English made revolver market
