H.W. MORTIMER, LONDON
A RARE 8-BORE FLINTLOCK DOUBLE-RIFLE FROM THE ARSENAL OF THE NIZAM of HYDERABAD, inventory no. APX-187-EX-73,
circa 1790, with rebrowned twist 32 1/2in. barrels signed on the breech-end of the barrels 'H.W. MORTIMER LONDON' and 'GUNMAKER TO HIS MAJESTY', dove-tailed fore-sight on screw-down mount, standing notch rear-sight with two additional folding leaves also on a screw-down mount, farsi script behind rear-sight, gold bands at breech, gold-lined touch-holes, broad double-screwed top-tang with carved sighting channel and engraved with the mask of a lioness further gold band, flat locks with moulded semi bevelled edges, stepped tails and signed 'H.W. MORTIMER' in script below the gold lined semi rain-proof pans (linings renewed), roller frizzens and swan-necked cocks, chequered walnut half-stock with raised carved cheek-piece, iron furniture including scrolled lower tang, single set triggers for both barrels, and substantial wood ramrod, inlet repair forwards of right lock and another around top-tang

Provenance: The collection of weapons formerly belonging to the Nizam of Hyderabad was acquired by the esteemed companies of Westley Richards and Holland & Holland sometime in the early 1980's. It is quite possible that the rifle was renovated by Holland & Holland before being offered at auction by Christies. A similar rifle but in 12-bore is shown in plates 72-75 on page 47 of H. Lee Munson's book 'The Mortimer Gunmakers, 1753-1923'
