A TRUNK OF WRITTEN DOCUMENTS, PHOTOGRAPHS AND OTHER EPHEMERA RELATING TO FLYING ACE WING COMMANDER JOHN EVELYN SCOULAR D.F.C.,
mostly of World War Two vintage and including a large photograph album mainly covering his service years between 1936-41, many of studio size together with a number of newspaper cuttings, another smaller photograph album of more personal photographs but both albums containing images of aircraft, aerial photographs, war damage and crashes, a plastic folder of letters and certificates including his service record book, his personal flying log book spanning the years 1946-70, a large folio hand written diary compiled mostly by Scoular but with the help of members of 73 Squadron also containing photographs and newspaper cuttings, a privately published volume on Scoular's service career, a vintage leather attache case marked 'J. SCOULAR' and containing squadron photographs, framed crests, letters and cuttings (case and contents as found), a soft leather pilot's briefcase marked to 'J. SCOULAR' (distressed, losses), Scoular's black leather parade baton, a leather zip-up writing case mounted with gilt RAF pilot's wings and a Kings crown, the case only for Scoular's Distinguished Flying Cross now containing a mounted set of miniatures including the D.F.C., 39-45 Star, Africa Star with North Africa bar, Italy Star, Defence medal, War Medal with mention in dispatches leaf and the Croix De Guerre, the telegram referring to the issue of the D.F.C., a modern wallet of medal ribbon fragments, a volume by Arch Whitehouse 'Heroes of The Sunlit Sky' detailing the careers of 75 fighter aces from various nations and including Scoular, a souvenir Queen Elizabeth II coronation tin containing a dog-tag and compass belonging to A.C. Scoular, Border Regt. (Scoular's father), all contained in a japanned uniform trunk marked 'J.E. SCOULAR, RAF'.
Provenance: The following is taken directly from the forward of the privately published service record:
"After training at the Civil Training School at Desford he (Scoular) entered the Royal air Force Volunteer Reserve on the 6th April 1936 as Acting Pilot Officer And was posted to No. 7 Flying Training School at Peterborough. On passing out he was posted to No. 19 Fighter Squadron at Duxford on the 25th of October 1936.
In March of 1937 he was transferred to No. 73 Squadron which at the time was based at Mildenhall. Up until the outbreak of World War II he moved with 73 Squadron to many bases in the United Kingdom. On the 3rd of September 1939 the squadron was at Digby, but within a week the squadron was in France. Firstly at Le Havre during the 'Phoney War' then Caen, Le Havre again and in October at Norrent Fontes. He was then posted to Rouvres where the squadron stayed until the evacuation from France - although several moves around airfields took place during the battle.
His first confirmed 'kill' was whilst flying a Hurricane on the 23 November 1939 when he downed a Dornier 17. By the end of hostilities, he had 16 1/2 confirmed and 2 probables, plus two flying bombs (V1s) and a share of a train!
After a period in 1940 with No. 6 Operational Training Unit at Sutton Bridge and 214 Squadron Reserve Training Flight he was posted to Heliopolis and in November 1940 he joined 'K' Flight in Port Sudan. After four months, in April 1941 'K' Flight became 250 Squadron, led by now by Flight Lieutenant Scoular, D.F.C.
After service with 262 and 258 Wings and a spell in hospital he returned to the unit. In January 1942 H.Q RAF ME (sic) From March 1942 to November of that year he was based at Levant. During June he was made War. Sub. Squadron Leader.
The next move was to Malta as Deputy Station Commanding Officer based at Luqa and Takali, becoming C.O. in August 1943. He returned to England in December 1943 and became C.O. Flying at 55 CTU and in July 1944 left for Senior Command Course at Cranwell. C.O. at RAF Friston from September to December then posted to HQ 10 Group at Box. This took him to the outbreak of peace in Europe in May 1945.
His service was extended on 10th February 1948. Appointment to Commission, Training Branch as Flying Officer, 3rd December 1952. Relinquished commission on the 29th of March 1954, retaining the rank of Wing Commander".
