Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed in October 1896 for a "Stacey"

The vendor has kindly provided us with the following information:

"Holland's sold it to Stacey, in 1896. We suspect this was an engagement present of a trio of guns from Edith to Cyril Stacey, they married in 1897. Edith was my aunt's godmother and very good friends with my great grandmother and grandfather. Edith was later widowed and probably gave it to my grandfather (Francis Hill - name scribbled in case) as a birthday or wedding present, my father later inherited it from him.

Edith was a Gibbons of Boddington Manor near Staverton. Both she and her husband were very keen riders to hound. He was master of hounds of the North Cotswolds and later she became master of her own pack of hounds in Monmouthshire.

We found a link talking about her husband Cyril in 'Bailey's Magazine of Sports and Pastimes' 1900. It also shows an image of Cyril Stacey. We believe he was an officer of the 14th Hussars and rose to be a major. In 1898 he raised the Monmouthshire squadron of the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars Yeomanry which contained what was known as a Cardiff troop. He resigned from the army in about 1910 through ill health.
