AN IMPRESSIVE 20-BORE FLINTLOCK DOUBLE-BARRELLED CARRIAGE-PISTOL WITH SPRUNG BAYONET SIGNED 'NUNN', no visible serial number,
circa 1815, with browned twist slightly tapering round 7in. side by side barrels, the top-rib with a scroll engraved flourish at breech and fitted with a hollow section folding triangular bayonet marked with a crown over 'D.L' on the mount and released by a trigger catch on the engraved top-tang, platinum lines and touch-holes at breech, engraved bevel-edged step-tailed locks signed 'NUNN' in script below the rainproof pans, sliding safes behind the cocks, roller frizzens with border engraved front faces, walnut half-stock with finely chequered bag-shaped butt, shaped white metal escutcheon engraved with an Earl's crown over the gothic letter 'C' for the Cowper family, double triggers with blued and engraved trigger guard bow, shaped fore-end barrel-key escutcheons and brass tipped mahogany ramrod, the whole retaining much original finish and colour

Provenance: This pistol is almost certainly the work of James Nunn of Hertford, Hertfordshire and is believed to have been made for the 5th Earl Cowper (b.1778, d. 1837)
