A RARE CASED 16-BORE DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING-GUN WITH FLINT & PERCUSSION LOCKS, serial no. 4230,
circa 1825, with twist 30in. barrels (finish faded), the raised top-rib signed 'GUN MAKER TO HIS MAJESTY', the rib-end at breech bearing a gold rectangular panel signed 'T. MORTIMER, LUDGATE HILL, LONDON', applied silver fore-sight, borderline and florally engraved breech-blocks with gold lined vents for flintlock and another pair of breech-blocks signed in a similar fashion with platinum vented plugs for percussion (traces of colour to both sets), two pairs of colour hardened locks, the flint set with border and gamescene engraving and signed in gothic script 'T. MORTIMER', double roller frizzens, shaped pedestal rainproof pans and engraved cocks, the percussion set signed in a banner and with border and scroll engraving with en-suite hammers, figured walnut half-stock finely chequered at the wrist, engraved blued iron furniture including square-backed trigger-guard with raised pistol-grip tang and brass-tipped mahogany ramrod, complete in its maker's walnut storage case compartmented and lined in green baize and containing the gun with both sets of locks detached and every conceivable accessory including unbreeching tools, cap, wad and flint boxes & wallet, oil bottle, powder and shot flasks, nipple-keys, wad punches, spring cramp, cleaning rods and turn screw etc., the inside of lid with recessed parchment 'THOMAS MORTIMER' trade-label, the case also bearing its W. Keith Neal collection medallion numbered 'C179'

A hand written note in Neal's hand and dated 1949 accompanies the lot stating that this shotgun was formerly the property of Sir Morgan George Grafton, 3rd Baronet of Mohill Castle, County Leitrim (1788-1867)
