HETHERINGTON, NEWARK
A 20-BORE FLINTLOCK BRASS-BARRELLED BLUNDERBUSS WITH SPRUNG BAYONET, no visible serial number,
circa 1770, with triple-staged 14in. cannon barrel, the octagonal to sixteen sided breech signed on the top-flat 'NEWARK', triangular cross-section bayonet mounted to the top of barrel release by a catch to the top-tang, flat lock with moulded border and stepped tail signed below the semi rainproof pan 'HETHERINGTON', walnut banana full-stock with unusual detachable fore-end tip, dot and checkerboard chequering at wrist, borderline engraved brass furniture including raised and scrolled pistol-grip lower tang, moulded ramrod pipes (missing ramrod) and shield shaped escutcheon to wrist
Provenance: Unusually, the front 4 1/2in. of the fore-end is detachable separately from the rest of the stock. This may be an indication that originally the blunderbuss was supplied with two sets of barrels and fore-ends or possibly was converted from an earlier sporting gun. This could be further born out by the fact that Hetherington is more usually known as an early to mid 19th century gunsmith
