A SCARCE 6-BORE DOG-LOCK BRASS-BARRELLED BLUNDERBUSS or MUSKETOON SIGNED 'I. SHOREY', FOR RENOVATION, no visible serial number,
circa 1705, with heavy two-stage 24in. brass barrel with substantial banded cannon muzzle, London proofs and makers mark 'IS' below a star, the breech also with substantial moulded band, square ended iron top-tang fixed from below, slab-sided iron lock held by three substantial dome-headed side-nails and signed 'I. SHOREY', pointed tail, slab-sided ring-necked cock with floating 'dog-catch' behind, heavy walnut full-stock (replaced in antiquity, cracked and pegged at wrist), exposed muzzle, original sheet metal furniture pieces re-used and replacement ramrod, the trigger-guard bow retaining a sealed collection tag from an unknown collection numbered '122'
Provenance: Joseph Shorey was a London gunmaker who became free of the Gunmakers Company in 1688, eventually producing pieces for the Board of Ordnance in 1703 till 1711
