25 1/2in. nitro reproved chopperlump barrels (converted from .246 calibre, London proofed in 1978), matt sight rib with open sights and folding leaf sight, white metal inlaid sight lines and marked for 150 and 300 yards, ramp-mounted bead fore-sight with protector hood, the wide sunken rib engraved 'J. PURDEY & SONS. AUDLEY HOUSE. SOUTH AUDLEY STREET. LONDON. ENGLAND.', the tubes engraved 'CALIBER .300 H&H MAGNUM. REGULATED FOR 180 GRAIN BULLET', the under rib engraved 'REBORED BY J. ROBERTS & SON. LONDON.', bolstered treble-grip action with side-clips, removable striker discs, automatic bolted safety with gold-inlaid 'BOLTED' and 'SAFE' details, cocking-indicators, best fine acanthus scroll engraving with floral bouquets, retaining much colour-hardening and finish, 14 3/4in. well-figured pistolgrip stock with cheekpiece, engraved steel pistolgrip-cap, sling swivels and including 7/8in. rubber recoil pad, weight 8lb. 14oz., in its brass-cornered oak and leather case, with sighting target
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this rifle was completed in June 1940 for HH Ali Khan of Jaora as a .246 hammerless ejector double rifle with 25 1/2in. barrels.
Jaora State was a 13 gun-salute princely state of the British Raj. It was part of the Malwa Agency, and was founded by 'Abdu'l Ghafur Muhammad Khan, a Muslim of Afghan Pashtun descent and a Rohilla in 1808. In 1818 the state became a British protectorate. 'Abdu'l Ghafur Muhammad Khan was a cavalry officer serving the Pashtun leader Muhammad Amir Khan. He later served the Holkar Maharaja of Indore State, subduing Rajput territories in northern Malwa and annexing their lands. In return for his services, he was granted the title of Nawab in 1808. The state was confirmed by the British government in 1818 by the Treaty of Mandsaur.
Nawab Muhammad Ismail (ruled 1865-1895) was an honorary major in the British Army. During the reign of Nawab Muhammad Iftikhar Ali Khan (ruled 1895-1947), Piploda became a separate state in 1924, and Panth-Piploda became a province of British India in 1942. Nawab Muhammad Usman 'Ali Khan (ruled 1947-1948) acceded to the Government of India on 15 June 1948
