26in. nitro chopperlump barrels (converted from .360 Express, London reproofed in 1976), raised matt rib, open sights and two folding leaf sights with white metal inlaid sight lines and marked for 100, 200 and 250 yards, ramped bead fore-sight, the breech end mounted with a Zeiss Diatal-Z 4x32 telescopic sight, serial no. 1355823, in quickly-detachable mounts, rib engraved 'J. PURDEY & SONS. AUDLEY HOUSE. SOUTH AUDLEY STREET. LONDON. MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID PRESSED STEEL.', the tubes engraved 'REGULATED FOR 285 GRAIN BULLET 9.3M/M X 74R', bolstered treble-grip action with side-clips, removable striker discs, bolted automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'BOLTED' and 'SAFE' details, cocking-indicators, best fine acanthus scroll engraving with floral bouquets, the underside with 'J. PURDEY & SONS LONDON' in an oval cartouche, retaining traces of colour-hardening and renewed finish, 14 1/4in. highly-figured pistolgrip stock with slim cheekpiece, engraved steel pistolgrip-cap, sling swivels and including 7/8in. rubber recoil pad, weight 9lb. 15oz. (unscoped) and 10lb. 13oz. (with scope), in a modern brass-cornered leather case with James Purdey & Sons gold-tooled trade label (no provision for telescopic sight)
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this rifle was completed in November 1920 for the Nawab of Jaora as a .360 hammerless ejector double Cordite rifle with 26in. Whitworth steel barrels with roughed rib.
The Purdey Ledger index and action book show that the order was received and work commenced on building the rifle in 1915.
Jaora State was a 13 gun-salute princely state of the British Raj. It was part of the Malwa Agency, and was founded by 'Abdu'l Ghafur Muhammad Khan, a Muslim of Afghan Pashtun descent and a Rohilla in 1808. In 1818 the state became a British protectorate. 'Abdu'l Ghafur Muhammad Khan was a cavalry officer serving the Pashtun leader Muhammad Amir Khan. He later served the Holkar Maharaja of Indore State, subduing Rajput territories in northern Malwa and annexing their lands. In return for his services, he was granted the title of Nawab in 1808. The state was confirmed by the British government in 1818 by the Treaty of Mandsaur.
The Nawab of Jaora would be Fakhr al-Dowla Mohammad Eftekhar (b. 1883 - d. 1947)
