Provenance: One of the most flamboyant sportsman of the late 18th/early 19th century, Colonel Thornton, Marquess Dupont, devoted the majority of his time to shooting, hunting, hawking, angling and racing. He was particular about having the very best equipment available at the time - in his own words he had 'a greater quantity of sporting apparatus of the most valuable and curious manufacture than any other sporting gentleman in England' and was a leading exponent of the multi-barrelled (volley) gun. He is known to have owned seven, twelve and even fourteen barrelled examples, the twelve barrelled featuring in the famous portrait of him by Philip Reinagle (1749-1833).
