A FINE 10-BORE 'ROYAL' SIDELOCK EJECTOR, serial no. 16443,
32in. nitro reproved barrels, rib engraved 'HOLLAND & HOLLAND. 98. NEW BOND STREET, LONDON.' and with scroll engraving at the breech end, 3in. chambers, bored approx. full choke in both, carved shell fences, automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, best bold royal scroll engraving interspersed with occasional floral motifs, the maker's name engraved within a cartouche, the underside engraved 'ROYAL HAMMERLESS EJECTOR', retaining much original colour-hardening and finish, 14 5/8in. well-figured stock including 1 1/8in. rubber recoil pad with ebonite spacer, weight 9lb. 8oz., in a lightweight leather case with some accessories.
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that the gun was completed in 1895 for the Duke of Bedford.
Herbrand Arthur Russell, 11th Duke of Bedford, KG, KBE, DL, FRS, FSA (February 1858 - August 1940) gained the rank of officer in the service of the Grenadier Guards and was made a Colonel of the 3rd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment between 1897 and 1908. He fought in the Egyptian campaign in 1882 and in the First World War, where he was mentioned in dispatches.
He held the office of Lord Lieutenant of Middlesex between 1898 and 1926, Mayor of Holborn in 1900, Aide-de-Camp to the Viceroy of India between 1885 and 1886, Military Aide-de-Camp between 1908 and 1920 to King Edward VII and King George V, and sometime Deputy Lieutenant of Bedfordshire.
He was President of the Zoological Society of London from 1899 to 1936, and was concerned with animal preservation throughout his life, and according to Jane Goodall's book "Hope for Animals", he was intrumental in saving the Milu.
Bedford served as president of the Cremation Society of Great Britain from 1921 to his death in 1940.
