'HOLLAND & HOLLAND'
AN UNSIGNED 12-BORE SELF-OPENING SIDELOCK EJECTOR, serial no. 32966,
28in. sleeved nitro barrels, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 and 3/4 choke, action of Holland & Holland design, Holland patent self-opening system, toplever with Holland style engraving to thumbpiece, automatic safety with 'SAFE' detail, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, rolled-edge triggerguard, J. Brazier Ashes lockplates, entirely un-engraved action and lockplates with some colour-hardening and traces of finish, 15in. figured stock, weight 6lb. 6oz.
Other Notes: Due to the unusual nature of the gun being completely unmarked and without any makers details, it has been sent for inspection by Holland & Holland and they have kindly sent us the following report:
"We have now received a report back from our factory on the 12 bore Sidelock gun No.32966 and with my additional examination we conclude the following regarding its identity :
Upon examination having crossed referenced all actual measurements, shapes and sizes of this gun with Holland & Holland " Royal " of similar vintage we found that all are virtually identical, apart from being un-engraved, but as this gun does not have bear the Holland & Holland name on either the action, lock plates or barrels we cannot identify this as a true Holland & Holland gun. When researching the original records they indicate that gun number, No.32966, was one of a pair of 12 bore Holland & Holland assisted opening guns with " Royal " scroll engraving ( price for the pair included the engraving costs ) and the gun No.32966 is completely un-engraved with no signs that the original engraving has been filed out.
I'm sorry that we cannot categorically state that this gun is a true Holland & Holland but perhaps whoever has undertaken the sleeving of the barrels or if you knew the whereabouts of the pair gun this may help with your enquiry.
