A 12 BORE FLINTLOCK SPORTING GUN BY MILNES OF LONDON CIRCA 1760, no visible serial number, with 36 in two stage octagonal to round barrel, struck with London proofs and foreigner's mark at breech, top flat with makers name 'MILNES LONDON', foliate decorated fixed breech, bevelled lock with borderlines and some foliate decoration, the makers name 'MILNES' to centre, swan-neck cock engraved to match, frizzen refaced, walnut half-stock fitted with brass mounts all foliate engraved and decorated, the trigger-guard with acorn finial, large brass escutcheon decorated with a flower and a thistle with faint initials or crest of original owner, old period repair to wrist with inset iron plates, this was a high quality gun from the 1760 period and was originally full stocked in the fashion of the day and then at a later date professionally reduced to half-stocked as fashions changed, a new nose-cap engraved to match the other mounts was fitted together with brass rammer pipes, with replacement rod and modern brass bodied powder flask
