A .577 SNIDER MKIII BREECH LOADING SERVICE ARTILLERY CARBINE CIRCA 1856, serial no. 1262, with 21 1/2 in. Ordnance marked barrel rifled with three grooves, fitted with block and blade front-sight and correct carbine pattern rear-sight, bayonet lug at muzzle, the lock stamped with the Crown V.R. cypher on the tail dated 1856 to the centre together with various government inspection stamps, fitted with Mk III positive bolt locked breech, regulation brass mounted full walnut stock the butt bearing two Ordnance roundels, the butt-cap tang with faint volunteer militia artillery unit markings, complete with sling swivels and original cup ended rod, this is quite an interesting and rare variant service artillery carbine, originally a Liege contract 1st Model Pattern 1853 artillery carbine and one of a small number of early carbines converted to Mk III Snider in 1871 at Birmingham, most Mk III Snider artillery carbines were new made arms not conversions, and most conversions were of the Pattern 1861 muzzle loading carbines to Mk II** Snider, the face of the breech block has a deep vee ground in its centre, three small shallow grooves have been cut in the chamber,
