A .685 PERCUSSION RIFLED SADDLE-CARBINE, MODEL 'PAGET CAVALRY CARBINE', gun no. 65,
circa 1852/53, with round iron 15 3/4in. barrel rifled in four grooves, applied fore-sight, small folding ladder rear-sight, borderline engraved lock of flint form signed 'TOWER' on the tail and marked with a crown and 'V.R.' device forwards of the hammer, walnut full-stock, brass furniture, the heel-plate spur engraved 'Q.O.R. W.Y.C.' together with 'A' over '65' for 'The Queens Own Royal Worcestershire Yeomanry Cavalry (Troop 'A' carbine '65'), long 'J' shaped iron saddle-bar to left cheek and captive iron stirrup ramrod, the whole refinished in antiquity
Provenance: Smoothbore Paget carbines were taken from stores in the early 1850's and rifled with either three or four grooves. They were primarily issued to Yeomanry Cavalry Units where they remained in service until the mid 1860's. The Ordnance Stores List for 1862 lists only 149 rifled Percussion Paget Carbines remaining on hand and by 1866 only 15,000 cartridges for the East Worcestershire Yeomanry Cavalry; the last Regiment still issued with rifled Pagets were in store.
