A PRESENTATION .410 (3IN. SMOOTHBORED) JOHN THOMAS 1871 PATENT SINGLE-BARRELLED TOPLEVER HAMMER ROOK RIFLE, serial no. 24884,
circa 1882, 24 7/8in. nitro reproved (in 1971, likely smoothbored from a rook rifle calibre) octagonal to round barrel by Adams & Tait, with matt top flat, open sights and bead fore-sight, the octagonal section ending in a crenellated leaf design, the breech end engraved 'MAY GREENER. THE CEDARS. ERDLINGTON.', 3in. chamber, bored approx. 3/4 choke, Thomas patent barrel-locking action, modification of patent no. 3091 of 15th November 1871, ornately carved percussion fence, broad button striker, slender toplever, side-mounted extractor bar, unsigned rebounding sidelock with ornately carved c-scroll hammer with gold detailing, feathered border engraving, retaining traces of original colour-hardening, 13 7/8in. highly-figured pistolgrip stock with horn pistolgrip-cap and heel and toe plates, the chequering with ornate bordering, gold shield-shaped escutcheon engraved 'M.G FROM C.E.G.', Hackett snap fore-end carved en suite (minor losses to edges) and with fluted horn finial, weight 4lb. 4oz., in a canvas and leather case with gold-tooled red leather W.W. Greener Ltd. trade label
