P. LECOURTIER
A FRENCH PATINATED BRONZE GROUP OF TWO HOUNDS, ENTITLED 'DEUX CHIENS DE CHASSE ATTACHES',
cast from the model by Prosper Lecourtier, late 19th Century, measuring approx. 14in. x 17 1/4in. x 8 3/4in., signed 'P. LECOURTIER'

Provenance: Prosper Lecourtier was born in Meuse (France) in 1851.
A pupil of Jules Coutan and the famed sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet, he first exhibited at the Salon in 1875 and was the recipient of several awards and medals, including a second class medal at the 1879 Salon for a bronze 'Cheval Arabe', a third class medal in 1880 and a first class medal in 1902. At the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900 he was awarded a bronze medal. He continued to exhibit until his death in 1924.
His work covered many areas of animal and equestrian themes, but he is best known and lauded for his delicate and insightful portrayals of dogs.
