CHARLES JONES, LONDON
A RARE 12-BORE PERCUSSION SPORTING-GUN WITH WATERPROOF LOCK, MODEL 'JONES' PATENT', serial no. 186,
circa 1835 and built to Charles Jones's patent 6394 of 1833, with browned damascus 30in. barrels, the top-rib signed 'CHARLES JONES 26 ST JAMES STREET LONDON', border engraved breech-blocks with renewed colour, moulded and carved action with integral exhaust vents and scroll engraved sliding cover with large carved chequered thumb-piece, the cover opening to reveal internal strikers with capping noses, scroll engraved top-tang with carved pedestal marked '186', isolated scroll engraved oval cocking piece mounts with slab-side scroll engraved eared cocks, figured walnut straight-hand half-stock chequered at the wrist, iron furniture, double triggers, broad finialled trigger plate signed forwards of the trigger-guard bow 'CHARLES JONES'S PATENT WATERPROOF LOCKS WITH CONCENTRIC SEARS & TRIGGERS', smooth fore-end with single barrel key (fore-end cracked through and repaired) and plain ramrod pipes with later iron and brass-mounted ramrod

Other Notes: The Jones system was well thought of in England for not only did it keep the firing mechanism safe from the elements it also prevented pieces of shattered cap from wounding the shooter, a common problem with early brittle caps. To this end a different and unique cap was used; one where the priming compound was external and the cap was actualy placed on the striker nose, not on a nipple as was the convention.
