28in. black powder only damascus barrels with broad raised partially matted rib, central section engraved 'ALEXR. HENRY. 12 SOUTH ST. ANDREW ST. EDINBURGH. PATENT NO. 2223.', open sights with folding leaf sight, bead fore-sight, Henry patent rifling, Jones patent rotary underlever, carved percussion fences, non-rebounding back action locks with bolted dolphin hammers, articulated front trigger, best fine border and acanthus scroll engraving, retaining traces of original colour-hardening, 14 1/4in. well-figureed pistolgrip stock with engraved steel pistolgrip-cap (with trap), sling eyes and engraved steel heel and toe plates, in its brass-cornered oak and leather case with pigskin leather lining and original 12 South Saint Andrew Street address trade label

Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that the rifle was competed as a 'Best Double C.F. Express Rifle .450 gauge, 28in. barrels, patent no. 2223' for a 'solid taper case, 4 drs, usual bullet'. The original name in the records is 'Harry Cropley' but this has been crossed out and overwritten 'C.J. Cunningham'. The date listed is 1873
