A SUBSTANTIAL 8-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-RIFLE, serial no. 3436,
circa 1877, with heavy fine damascus 28in. rifled barrels, the barrels signed at breech 'JAMES. WOODWARD & SONS' on the left and '64 ST JAMES'S STREET LONDON' on the right, flat finely matted top-rib with elongated bead fore-sight retained by a screw, rear-sight with two folding leaves, border and scroll engraved breech-block with platinum vents, fully borderline and rose-scroll engraved top-tang inlet with a central platinum line, border and rose-scroll engraved bar-action locks and hammers, the locks signed 'JAMES WOODWARD & SONS', sliding safes forwards of the hammer-breasts, highly figured chequered walnut pistol-gripped half-stock (old repair and inlet forwards of comb), raised moulded cheek-piece, chequered iron heel-plate, engraved trigger-guard bow and tang, ball and needle finials, plain ramrod thimbles and brass-mounted ebony ramrod, traces of colour and finish throughout

Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed in 1875 for a John D. Lloyd Esq. as a muzzle loading double 8-bore with 28in. barrels.
