Product Details

* MAUSER, GERMANY
A RARE 9.5x60mmR (TURKISH) BOLT ACTION REPEATING RIFLE, MODEL 'M1887', serial no. 220541,
one of only approximately 10,000 post Turkish contract guns assembled after the Turkish changed over to the M1890, with blued 30 1/2in. barrel, rounded receiver with matching number straight handled bolt, the receiver marked in German language, walnut full-stock with iron furniture and concealed magazine-tube in the fore-end, provision for side-mounted clearing rod (absent)

Provenance: This rifle is one of the approximately 10,000 rifles that were completed after the Turkish enacted the clause in their 500,000 rifle contract to shift production to the next new design manufactured by Mauser. A total of 220,000 M1887 Rifles were shipped to Turkey before production was shifted over to the M1890 rifle chambered for the 7.65x53mm smokeless cartridge.
Mauser completed the balance of their work-in-progress inventory, marked them in German and placed them in storage against a future order which never came. These rifles were completed as smokeless powder was making them obsolete. However, with full mobilisation of the German Army in WWI and with the realization that the war would last beyond the two to three months everyone had predicted, these rifles were commandeered and saw service early in WWI in the hands of several regiments from Wurttemberg.
