Product Details

BOSS & CO.
AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE 1887 PATENT 12-BORE SIDELEVER HAMMER EJECTOR PIGEON GUN, serial no. 4009,
31in. nitro reproved fine damascus barrels with broad raised matt rib, 2 3/4in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 and 1/2 choke, sidelever action with carved percussion fences, incorporating Perkes patent ejector system, action flats marked with patent details for patent no. 12176 of 8th September 1887, use number 106, rebounding back action locks, fine acanthus scroll engraving with feathered bordering, the lockplates with scrolling banners engraved 'BOSS & CO.', triggerguard with refreshed engraving and tapped for a detachable pistolgrip (absent), 14 5/8in. well-figured stock with inserted wooden spacers at comb and underside and including 1in. rubber recoil pad, fore-end with grip-catch release lever, weight 7lb. 11oz.

Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that there is very little information available in the records on this gun beyond the numbers book referencing a centre fire 12-bore circa 1888/9 (with 29in. barrels). The serial number does fit in neatly with the emergence of ejector guns being made by Boss, the first listed as being No. 3920 in 1887.

Literature: In his book 'Boss & Co. Best Gunmakers', Donald Dallas makes reference to the records listing a total of just 22 centre fire hammer ejector guns, with just 8 made between 1887 and 1890.
