for 1901, 28in. nitro replacement barrels (by the makers in 1979, barrel number 9837), the rib engraved 'BOSS & CO. 13 / 14 CORK STREET. LONDON. W.1.', and gold-inlaid '3' at the breech end, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. and 3/4 choke, toplever gold-inlaid '3', automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, best fine acanthus scroll engraving with floral bouquet, retaining very slight traces of original colour-hardening, 15in. well-figured stock (cracked and repaired at head) including 3/4in. rubber recoil pad, weight 7lb. 1oz., in a leather slip

Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that the gun was ordered on the 6th February 1901 for the Hon. D.H. Cairns as a toplever h'less ejector to match gun no.s 4347 / 8 as a 3rd gun.

Research would indicate that "Hon. D.H. Cairns" could be Hon. Douglas Halyburton Cairns of Carnach House
