A GOOD .451 (WHITWORTH) PERCUSSION TARGET-RIFLE, serial no. D597,
circa 1865 with 35 7/8in. re-blued round heavy barrel marked 'WHITWORTH PATENT' towards the breech, squared mounting-block for the dove-tailed windage adjustable tunnel fore-sight with spirit level, the mounting-block for the ladder rear-sight signed 'MANCHESTER ORDNANCE & RIFLE CO.', the ladder marked 'PATENT', squared patent breech (traces of colour), plain tang fitted with mounting-block for aperture vernier target sight (present), detented bolted lock signed 'MANCHESTER ORDNANCE & RIFLE CO.' and with the Whitworth trademark on the tail (colour faded), well figured walnut pistolgrip half-stock with chequered grip and fore-end (cracked and repaired at wrist), back position sight mount base inlet into comb, chequered iron butt-plate, horn fore-end cap and pistol grip cap, chequered trigger-blade, silver escutcheon to underside of stock and no provision for ramrod
